Stakeholder consultation on converting to Academy status
February 8 – March 20, 2012
The Governing Body and the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT) at Redland Green School are considering whether it is in the best interests of the school to apply to convert to Academy status under the provisions of the Education Act 2010.
Below you will find a consultation document on Academy status, which is designed to assist Governors to further assess the case for proceeding – or otherwise – to the next stage of formally applying for Academy conversion.
Please note: no decision has been taken as yet in relation to a final decision on whether to convert or not.
The document is in three sections:
- Introduction from the Governing Body – including how to contribute your views
- Key issues
- Frequently Asked Questions
We welcome all your comments via the methods described in Section 1 of the consultation document by March 20th 2012.
Thank you

25 January 2012: Information from Governors on Academy Status
Governors' statement on academy status
As some of you may know, Redland Green School’s Governing Body has, for some time, been considering whether or not it is appropriate for Redland Green to convert to Academy status in order to build on the school’s many successes to date.
After careful monitoring and consideration over almost 12 months, a Governors’ Working Party has now produced a detailed report and recommendation, which was presented and discussed at an extraordinary Full Governing Body meeting last night (January 24th).
Following that discussion, and with the best interests of the whole school community in mind, a decision was taken to register an interest with the Department for Education in becoming an Academy.
It is important to note that no decision has been taken at this stage in relation to a final decision on whether to convert or not. ‘Registering an interest’ enables the school to access and consider more detailed information and consult all stakeholders on their views – including parents, staff and students – to inform a final decision.
Governors will therefore now initiate a formal period of consultation, remaining wholly committed to ensuring a transparent and open process throughout. Full details of consultation arrangements will be made available to all stakeholders following the next Governing Body meeting on February 7th. There will be a range of opportunities for stakeholders to express their views, including meetings for parents/carers and staff to discuss and understand the issues more fully.
Governors will then have a further decision to make – whether or not formally to apply to become an Academy. It is currently envisaged that this decision will be made by March 30th (tbc), once consultation and any further investigations are completed. The overriding priority will always be to create conditions that will enable RGS students to develop and achieve their full potential.

The consultation process will start on Wednesday, 8 February 2012 when a full consultation document will be made available to all stakeholders, together with details of consultation meetings.
You will be able to email your comments and questions not already covered in the consultation document to a dedicated address consultation@redlandgreen.bristol.sch.uk to which all consultation correspondence should be sent. We will then collate responses and aim to answer any outstanding questions at our stakeholder meetings.
