Leading Edge Science Resources
Redland Green School achieved Specialist Science Status in September 2010 as a result of its rich and varied provision of science as well as its excellent student achievement in this area and very high take-up of Science and Mathematics.
The Redland Green site benefits from dedicated specialist Biology, Chemistry and Physics laboratories in the Post 16 Centre - all fitted out and fully equipped, exclusively for the use of our post 16 students. These facilities are resourced by qualified technical support staff, affording students a high degree of independent experimental and investigative study. Kim Garland, Assistant Headteacher, and Sally Bott, Curriculum Leader for Science, have recent experience of leading Science in and across schools and will use their expertise to ensure that learning and teaching within the department reflects the best of current national practice.
Redland Green has been working with a variety of partners demonstrating the practical aspects of science in everyday situations. Students’ learning in science is enriched because:
- We have dedicated science laboratories for post 16 students.
- We have a close relationship with Bristol University enabling students to attend science workshops in university laboratories.
- The school has excellent links with relevant organisations in the local, regional and national community.
- For example, students have been working with conservation groups on the sustainable development of our schools sites, as well as working with the Association of Science in Education.
- Redland Green is working with engineers from Bristol based firms such as Rolls Royce, looking at the practical aspects of science in everyday situations.
- Students recently had the opportunity to take part in National Pathology week where they worked with local hospitals.
ICT Provision Designed for Tomorrow
Redland Green School is part of a city-wide initiative to deliver leading edge ICT learning provision. The availability of ICT to all members of the learning community is excellent. In the Post 16 Centre there are dedicated suites and clusters of computers exclusively for the use of post 16 students. There is also a Post 16 Learning Resource Centre for their exclusive use stocked with books, journals and excellent ICT provision.
